Winterborne Custom Bicycles is located in Guelph Ontario, within an hour drive of Toronto. Located in an area at the cross roads of industry, technology, and agriculture, Guelph is a progressive family oriented community. Cycling in this area is great as there are lots of trails for mountain bikes, and premier road cycling accessible within just a 5 to 10 minute pedal in any direction out of town.
Jason Filer is the Owner, and Operator of Winterborne Custom Bicycles. Winterborne was officially opened in March 2004. Jason has a history of working in bike shops while he was attending college in Toronto and then University in Thunder Bay. Jason has a degree in Anthropology and worked as a field archaeologist for several years in Ontario and British Columbia. He then again turned his attention to bicycles. “I knew that I wanted to play a role in the industry (bicycle), and I was sure that desire would eventually take me into production. I am a lifelong bicycle rider, and for most of it I had been riding bikes that were an improper fit.
I’m pretty tall, 6 foot 8, and even though I was riding good quality bikes the fit was never right, not until I had a custom made for myself. The frame is the heart of the ride! My cycling improved overnight! I was getting a proper leg extension, and I was stretched out enough for a good position for my back and enough to maximize O2 intake, all with a proper center of gravity on the bike.
This experience inspired me to want to make bikes for others, to enhance their cycling experience. The beauty of a custom frame is that I can make it to your exact specifications. By these specs I mean, your personal body geometry, combined with the level of aggressiveness that you want your bike to be at. The frame is the heart of the ride! In this day and age to try to get an apprenticeship in with a master frame builder is almost next to impossible. In order to acquire the basic skill set needed to build a bike frame I had to enroll at the United Bicycle Institute in Ashland Oregon (one of the finest educational experiences I’ve ever had!). This allowed me to accomplish a level of knowledge that would otherwise take years to develop on my own. With several bicycles now under my belt I feel very confident in the ride-ability and safety of my frames.
My goal here at Winterborne is to produce bicycles that everyone will want to ride, from the pro-level racer, and weekend rider, to the fitness commuter. Of course the bicycles are of top quality, made from bicycle specific tubing that customers will recognize like True Temper, Columbus, and Dedacci, designed and produced to the customers specifications. Here at Winterborne I want the customer to play an involved role in how their bike will handle, the equipment they want to spec on it including their own, to how the bike will fit. These key considerations are the basic advantage in having a custom frame-set built for yourself. As a final note I just want to express my excitement for Winterborne, I look forward to working with all customers to help make their personal cycling goals a reality.
