Hubs

A good hub set should last a cyclist for years, and it's quite important to take your hub decision seriously. When it boils down to it if your hub fails, gets worn or pitted then your whole wheel is shot. Choosing a good hub set to start off your Winterborne Wheels will ensure that your wheel set will roll smoothly for seasons to come. Here are some things to think about when selecting a hub set:

  • 1) Cartridge or free rolling bearings?
  • 2) Type of hub and end use for the wheel set...like Racing, Mountain, Commuter, or Track.
  • 3) Spoke count
  • 4) Freewheel or Cassette
  • 5) Standard or Oversize hub axle
  • 6) Outer locknut spacing
  • 7) Disc mounts or not...and type of disc mount
  • 8) Everyday use, or race specific
  • 9) And last but not least price range.

Here are some hubs that we recommend to our Winterborne Wheels customers:

The Shimano line up of hubs is our typical go to hub brand. They have an excellent selection of hubs for all types of bicycles, at any price range. The great benefit about them mechanically is that all of their hubs are serviceable, so if the bearings get a little gritty, then the hub can be opened up and get repacked with some fresh new bearings, and Shimano grease. http://bike.shimano.com/

Chris King arguably makes the finest hubs available today. We have built many Winterborne Wheel-sets with hubs from Chris King, and really only one thing can be said...Sweet! No doubt about it these are expensive sealed bearing hubs, but have a look they do not disappoint. http://www.chrisking.com/hubs/hbs_index.html

For a great set of budget track hubs look no further than Miche. We've built a bunch of wheels with these, and wow do they roll nice. http://www.miche.it/home.html

For a beautiful Touring hub check out Phil Woods. These guys have been making high end sealed bearing hubs longer than any other company. http://www.philwood.com/phome.htm

Please note we do not sell hubs on their own, we only sell them in a hand built wheel package. Call for pricing on our custom wheel build packages 519-826-0556.
